"Presbyterian Healthcare Services became aware of the breach on June 9 and immediately secured the affected accounts. The breach investigation uncovered no evidence to suggest any personal information was accessed or stolen by the attacker and no reports been received to suggest any PHI has been misused.  

Healthcare Services Data Breach Impacts 183,000 Patients

The breach affected approximately 21% of Presbyterian Healthcare Services patients and plan members. Affected individuals have been offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for 12 months and have been advised to monitor their accounts and explanation of benefits statements carefully for any sign of fraudulent activity.

HIPPA/PHI Training Moments 

  • Be sure to follow best practices recommended by your facility. HIPPA guidelines stipulate to always try to encrypt a message containing PHI, or minimize the information so the person receiving the message gets the point without exposing too much. 
  • If you receive a text asking for PHI it is best to call the sender to verify the identity, or encrypt your response to make sure the information stays secure.
  • For your patient portal system, use a unique password that is not easily traced back to you, as well as keeping your login information safe.
  • Email mis delivery is a common and easy mistake, always double check the receiver email address before sending,
